The Beginner's Guide to Buying Blue Sapphire

Blue sapphire (Neelam) is the most valuable member of the corundum family. It's also one of the most powerful in Vedic astrology. Here's what to look for.
Color
The most prized blue sapphires are a velvety cornflower blue — not too dark, not too pale. Avoid stones that look inky black or greyish.
Clarity
Eye-clean stones (no visible inclusions to the naked eye) are the standard. A few silk-like inclusions are normal and acceptable.
Cut
Oval and cushion cuts are the most common. A well-cut stone will have good brilliance and even color distribution.
Treatment
Most sapphires on the market are heat-treated to improve color and clarity. This is standard and accepted. Untreated stones command a premium.
Certificate
Always buy with a lab certificate from a recognized lab (GIA, IGI, or local Indian labs like Gem Testing Laboratory Jaipur).
