How to Identify Real Rudraksha: 5 Field Tests
PTM Gems · 4 min read
Rudraksha beads have been used for thousands of years in spiritual practice. But not every bead sold as Rudraksha is genuine. Here are 5 ways to check.
1. The sink test
Real Rudraksha sinks in water. Fake beads (made of wood or plastic) often float or sink too quickly.
2. The X-ray test
Every real Rudraksha has internal compartments (called brahmas) corresponding to its mukhi count. These are visible under X-ray.
3. The heat test
Real Rudraksha is hard and dense. A fake made of soft wood will dent or burn under flame.
4. The mukhi count
Count the natural lines (mukhis) on the surface from the top to the bottom. Each line should run cleanly from end to end.
5. The certificate
Buy from sellers who provide a lab certificate. Reputable sellers like PTM Gems always include one.
